About the Author

Alois Zoitl earned his master’s degree and PhD from the Vienna Institute of Technology. He currently leads the Industrial Automation Research Group at fortiss GmbH in Munich. Before that, he headed the Distributed Intelligent Automation Group (Odo Struger Laboratory) at the Vienna University of Technology’s Automation and Control Institute. Dr. Zoitl is an active lecturer at the Technical University Munich, co-author of 100+ publications, co-inventor on four patents, founding member of the 4DIAC and OpENer open-source initiatives, member of the IEEE and the PLC open user organization, consultant for CAN in Automation, and member/convenor of IEC SC65B/WG15 for the IEC 61499 distributed automation standard.

Thomas Strasser earned his master’s degree and PhD from the Vienna University of Technology. He is currently a senior scientist in the Energy Department of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. Before that, he spent more than six years as a senior researcher at PROFACTOR. Dr. Strasser is an active lecturer at the Vienna University of Technology, guest professor at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, co-author of 120+ publications, recipient of two patents, active participant in IEEE conferences, associate editor of Springer and IEEE journals, senior member of IEEE, founding member of the 4DIAC open source initiative, and involved in IEC SC65B/WG15, IEC TC65/WG17, and IEC SyC Smart Energy/WG6.

Benjamin C. Alamar is a professor of sport management at Menlo College and a sports analytics consultant/researcher. He has consulted with a variety of teams in the NFL and NBA, including five seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and with a variety of companies in sports analytics. He has published numerous research studies in sports analytics and has written on sports analytics for outlets such as ESPN, Analytics Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal. Additionally, Alamar is the founding editor of the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports, the first peer-reviewed academic journal for research in sports analytics.Dean Oliver is the director of Production Analytics at ESPN, leading the development of sports analytics for the network. He worked for seven years in the NBA with the front offices of the Denver Nuggets and Seattle Supersonics, using analytics to improve trades, free agency, the draft, and coaching tactics. The contents of his book, Basketball on Paper, are now used broadly across the NBA. Oliver has a Ph.D. in engineering and has years of experience as an advance scout, collegiate scout, and coach.

The concept of analytics in sports and the prospect of its ultimate utility resulting in competitive advantage has progressively gained traction at the organizational level in professional sports. However, despite its growing legitimacy, many executives and decision makers have struggled to employ a comprehensive strategy to realize the full potential of an analytics initiative. Many times these efforts are impeded due to the daunting challenge of forming and integrating a complete analytics program that can compliment and support the goals of the organization, which without help can be a massive undertaking that can be discouraging, easily procrastinated, or only partially executed.Mr. Alamar has done a masterful job in providing those decision makers and fans alike a comprehensive blueprint from which they can gain a contextual understanding of the distinct components that need to be configured to ensure success. I found this book to be extremely through in explaining both the advantage an analytics program can have in an uber competitive setting, but also the role of quality personnel and processes as the prime ingredients of a successful analytic plan. Whether it is the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or the Champions League, success is always at a premium and sustained winning is usually found in the margins. This book offers a unique resource that competently describes the interaction among leadership, data management, information systems, and predictive analysis required to produce new data in a timely manner for more efficient decision making that ultimately promotes more successful outcomes.

Easily read for the lay person or old school coach who is not used to the changing world of sports data. Also good for the fan who may wish to have a peek behind the scenes of the changing world of how his favorite team is put together. I'm a sports fan but also a sports fiction writer. I picked this book up to get a better grasp of what a character I crafted might think like. It's been good for deepening my understanding of his addictive mindset.

I bought thinking it would give more ideas for analysis and what stats are working to help improve research or what ways would be helpful in performing your own research. So, I was disappointed there.If you are looking for policies or to set up a sports analytic department the book is thoughtful and will give you ideas to think about. Such as different departments will resist change and why they are stubborn in their set ways.I did pass this book on to a student who is interested in sports analytics.

I expected something else from this book. I was looking for discussions about specific cases of sports analytics impacting decision making and making a difference in the output of a sports agent (be it an athlete, a team, a scout, a sports investment fund). I was looking for discussions about specific KPIs, how they are captured, the reasoning underlying their conception and why they add (or fail to add) value.Instead, I found the book to be quite generic and basic, containing very little that someone who has any experience as an analyst in any industry would not know.Also, I felt that the book reads more like a manual, with a very bland narrative and no story telling.

Decision-makers at all levels throughout elite sports organizations should strongly consider investing their time in understanding the material presented in this book. My advice is to repeat the following cycle until it is no longer adding value to the decision-making process(es): 1) review the material; 2) apply one or more concepts; 3) repeat. Following this approach will undoubtedly result in several value-adding cycles and improve upon the analytics competencies of both the individual and organization.My advice and my confidence in the result are based the experience I have working with elite sports organizations on the development and execution of their analytics programs. Generally speaking, those organizations that have mastered the concepts covered in this book are well-poised to maintain the competitive advantages that they've gained through their analytics programs.

The book is well informed and well written but the analytics science in sports have made very fast progress since publication. The book can therefore be used as a general introduction to the matter (and does have historical value) but 2017 professionals will need additional readings.

Professor Alamar sets forth a comprehensive, yet easily readable in depth introduction to sports analytics. The book is a perfect mixture of concepts, explanations and stories, which makes the book very enjoyable and addictive (I read it in two days). This is a sport neutral book (only anecdotes and examples are sport specific), which makes the content applicable to all sports. It is a must read for anyone interested in sports, from a decision maker at a team, all the way to the most casual of fans as it is an understandable introduction to a very complex and increasingly influential facet of sports.

I was hoping for a little more detail from the book. It had some great insider information, but I felt that it was lacking in certain areas. I also found that there were several places in which he repeated himself. Unfortunately, there are not many books on this topic. With that in mind I do recommend this book to anyone interested in this field.

In 1999, environmental journalist Cone was awarded a Pew fellowship to examine the Arctic paradox: "How," she wondered, "could the Arctic, so innocent, primitive, so natural... be home to the most contaminated people on the planet?" What she discovered is that pollution is as global as the economy, and that industrialized nations—with their "Save the whales!" movements—are poisoning those very whales with chemical drift. In clear, engaging prose, she explains how PCBs leaking from a Chicago electrical transformer accumulate dramatically in sea mammals and people thousands of miles away. Traveling from Greenland to Alaska, she quickly finds that Power Bars and a down parka are inadequate to the Arctic, and that Inuit and Inupiat peoples rely on whales and seals for food and clothing because "nothing else is perfectly suited to their environment." In this sparsely populated territory, scientists have documented the world's swiftest ecosystem crash and mother's milk so chemically contaminated that it "could be classified as hazardous waste." But solutions are hard to find: there are no alternatives to replace contaminated food, it has become harder to ban chemicals in the U.S., and new contaminants are being introduced. Cone, an award-winning environmental reporter for the Los Angeles Times, recounts her travels throughout the afflicted region in a riveting narrative as notable for its conversational fluency as for the clarity of its alarming information. As she vividly describes her experiences with Arctic hunters, she elucidates how the well-being of circumpolar people has resided for millennia in the animals they hunt and eat. She then chronicles the painstaking work of scientists who discovered that the toxins Arctic dwellers now ingest in traditional foods cause mental impairment, reproductive failure, and weakened immune systems. Cone's title is a variation on Silent Spring, Rachel Carson's seminal 1962 book about the dangers of DDT. Tom J. Brown is Noble Foundation Chair in Marketing Strategy and Professor of Marketing in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Brown is a past recipient of the Sheth Foundation Best Paper Award in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. In addition, he received a Richard D. Irwin Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship while at the University of Wisconsin, the Kenneth D. and Leitner Greiner Teaching Award, and the Regents Distinguished Research Award, both at Oklahoma State University. In addition, he was recognized as an International Research Fellow at the University of Oxford for his work on corporate reputation. Dr. Brown's articles have appeared in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Retailing, and Journal of Service Research. It's good for when you're not familiar with marketing research but I'd admit it does feel a bit redundant at places but again this would be a fantastic book for someone wanting to get into the field.

Offers a great deal of useful information and guidance for developing market survey materials. We are using this for my market research course and I appreciate the insights it offers into developing meaningful surveys.
