Three words: It's a classic. Okay, that's four words, but whatever. The writer of this book is the teacher every working artist should wish was his or her art history instructor in school. This book is not some effete, fancy-pants, literary hoop-de-doo that's long a verbage and short on facts. It's really real, as in real technique in real time, which builds real understanding for the reader to appreciate the real men and women doing the real painting of the late 19th century. Really. I'm truly impressed.
The author devotes 3-4 pages for each work of art, pointing out elements of the design, use of colors, and style of each artist portrayed. The art as a whole is shown, then various parts of the whole are blown-up and described in detail. Very useful tool for understanding how each artist approached his subject, highlighting problem areas, over-painted areas, and other details of interest on each painting. I only wish there were a whole book like this on EACH of the artists presented, with equivalent commentary on all their work!
This is a very intense study of the Impressionists. It contains samples of all the major impressionists from 1860 to 1905. It lists the palette colors used and goes into great detail about the specific brush strokes used and different techniques the artist used to achieve the desired result. A great deal of background information, detailed timelines-this book is very well thought-out. Any level of artist will benefit from this. A must-have if you admire the impressionists and want to delve deeply into their methods.
Wife loved this book! - not just reprints of famous & not so well known paintings, but lots of insight into the artists, their personalities, and how that influenced their techniques, their choice of subject matter, and what particular style of Impressionism they painted in. . .

this is a great book, especially if you are a painter with knowledge of these artists and want to ponder and scheme further for your own work. personally, it reminded me of how important monet was in the formulation of high impressionism, revealed that courbet had a big bag of painterly tricks at his disposal, and underlined yet again that most of renoir's work is pretty cheesy. that said, it was interesting to learn that renoir came from a working class artisan background. he worked for years as a porcelain painter to save up for art school, unlike most of the other big names in impressionism who frequently came from moneyed families.i wish more books like this existed about other painters and historical periods. it would benefit artists and art writers alike to stay a bit more grounded in the medium. editorial criticism: overuse of the word "slurred" regarding brushstrokes in the technical descriptions. it started to stick out amusingly, but shouldn't ruin anybody's day.
